Bus Transportation

The Yankton School District provides transportation for eligible students in grades Jr. Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Safety is our priority and we are committed to the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community. Please be assured that YSD is implementing precautions to limit the risk of exposure to COVID-19 as your student is transported to and from school.

The following steps are being taken, per the Guidelines for School Buses, prepared by the South Dakota Department of Health, to help reduce the spread of COVID 19 on the buses. Rules concerning riding will be strictly enforced.

  • Students and drivers will be required to wear masks at all times while on the bus.

  • All buses will be disinfected prior to each trip using an electrostatic fog sprayer to ensure uniform distribution of disinfectant to all bus surfaces.

  • Hand sanitizer and disinfectant will be available on all buses.
  • No food, drink or gum will be allowed on the bus.

  • Students will be required to sit one to a seat (except siblings who will be required to share a seat) filling the bus from back to front.  After all seats have students in them, drivers will start assigning more than one student to each seat.

  • Anyone who is sick or has had close contact to a person with COVID-19 will not be allowed to use the bus and must stay home.

  • Individuals who are at a higher risk to develop severe illness from COVID-19 should limit use of the bus service.

Please read the new guidelines and requirements below to ensure that your student(s) receive transportation for the 2020-21 school year.

  • A NEW Out of Town or In Town Transportation Request form will need to be completed before student(s) will be placed on a route.  This applies to ALL students, whether they are new riders or have ridden the bus previously. To be routed for the first day of school, Transportation Requests need to be received by August 10, 2020.
  • A separate waiver must be signed for EACH student riding the bus. Students WILL NOT be transported until YSD has a Transportation waiver on file for your student.
  • Only students assigned to a bus will be allowed to ride that bus. Students may not have friends or relatives ride home with them. This will be strictly enforced due to COVID-19.

Out of Town Bus Riders - For riders residing outside Yankton City Limits and within the Yankton School District.

***All riders must complete a new Transportation Request for the 2020-21 school year and sign a separate waiver for EACH student receiving YSD Transportation.

  • Upon receipt of request and signed waiver(s):
  • Your student will be assigned to a route and you will receive notification of pick-up time and location.
  • Your student will receive a new one-time complimentary bus pass the first week of school. This bus pass must be used each time the student rides.  Replacement fee is $5.

In Town Bus Riders – In Town Busing will be provided to school from designated stop locations. Map and times are listed on the right.

***A new Transportation Request for the 2020-21 school year must be submitted for ALL students regardless of if they have received transportation in the past. A separate waiver for EACH student receiving YSD Transportation is also required.

  • Upon receipt of request and signed waiver(s):
  • Your student will be assigned to the requested pick-up location. Pick-up time and location are noted on the In Town Transportation Map.
  • Your student will receive a new one-time complimentary bus pass the first week of school. This bus pass must be used each time the student rides. Replacement fee is $5.
  • Students are to arrive at their assigned bus stop location ten minutes prior to the bus arrival time.
  • Students and parents are asked to review the YSD Bus Rules & Regulations found in the upper right hand corner of this page.
  • All students must be picked up at the SAME location as requested and confirmed by the Transportation Department.

Drivers must stop on the street or highway 20 feet or more from any school bus that has stopped and is flashing red warning lights.

  • This applies both to vehicles approaching from the rear and from the opposing lane.
  • All lanes of traffic must stop for the school bus, except in opposing lanes if the highway is divided with a center median.
  • No vehicle may proceed until the bus resumes motion and has turned off the red warning lights.
  • The stop arm on the bus is an added communication to other drivers, but the lack of an extended stop arm is not reason to pass a bus whose red lights are flashing.

Motorists should observe school buses carefully for either the "pass cautiously" yellow light signal or the required full stop when a bus is flashing red lights.  A vehicle owner can be cited when the driver of a car passes a school bus illegally.  A law enforcement officer need not witness this violation as Yankton School District buses are equipped with cameras and GPS.   Video and still pictures of stop arm violations will be reported promptly to local law enforcement.   We thank you in advance for using caution and good judgement when you meet a stopped school buses in and around our community.
