The Yankton School District provides transportation for eligible students in grades Jr. Kindergarten through 12th grade.  After school transportation is available to eligible Pre4 students.
Safety is our priority and we are committed to the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community. Please be assured that YSD is coordinating with the SD Department of Health and the Yankton School District Covid-19 Health Care Advisory Committee.
The following steps are being taken, per the Guidelines for School Buses, prepared by the South Dakota Department of Health, to help reduce the spread of COVID 19 on the buses. Rules concerning riding will be strictly enforced.
  • Eligible riders must register for bus service. Students will be assigned to a route and will be issued a transportation pass from the District during the first week of school or the applicable service start date.
  • Only eligible and registered riders will be permitted to use the service.
  • Capacities of the transport service will follow public health guidelines to the greatest extent possible:
    • Cleaning and disinfecting protocols including disinfecting buses
    • Hand sanitizer will be available on all buses.
    • Windows and roof vents will be opened to allow for outside air circulation, weather permitting.
    • Air purifiers have been added to buses with windows that do not open.
  • Additionally, the following rules have been applied for further safety and health measures.
    • Students will be required to sit one per seat (except siblings who will be allowed to share a seat), filling the bus from back to front. After all seats have students in them, drivers will start assigning more than one student to a seat.
Please read the new guidelines and requirements below to ensure that your student(s) receive transportation for the 2021-22 school year.
  • A NEW Out of Town or In Town Transportation Request form will need to be completed before student(s) will be placed on a route.  This applies to ALL students, whether they are new riders or have ridden the bus previously. To be routed for the first day of school, Transportation Requests need to be received by August 9, 2021.
  • A separate waiver must be signed for EACH student riding the bus. Students WILL NOT be transported until YSD has a Transportation waiver on file for your student.

DON’T PASS WHEN THE BUS IS STOPPED                          Drivers must stop on the street or highway 20 feet or more from any school bus that has stopped and is flashing red warning lights.

  • This applies both to vehicles approaching from the rear and from the opposing lane.
  • All lanes of traffic must stop for the school bus, except in opposing lanes if the highway is divided with a center median.
  • No vehicle may proceed until the bus resumes motion and has turned off the red warning lights.
  • The stop arm on the bus is an added communication to other drivers, but the lack of an extended stop arm is not reason to pass a bus whose red lights are flashing.

Motorists should observe school buses carefully for either the "pass cautiously" yellow light signal or the required full stop when a bus is flashing red lights.  A vehicle owner can be cited when the driver of a car passes a school bus illegally.  A law enforcement officer need not witness this violation as Yankton School District buses are equipped with cameras and GPS.   Video and still pictures of stop arm violations will be reported promptly to local law enforcement.   We thank you in advance for using caution and good judgement when you meet a stopped school buses in and around our community.
