Jr.K and Kindergarten FAQs

How do I register my child for Jr. Kindergarten or Kindergarten?

Please go to https://www.ysd.k12.sd.us/apps/pages/kdgregistration for more information.

Why Jr. Kindergarten or Kindergarten?

JrK is specifically designed for those students who have spring or summer birthdays. It gives these students an opportunity to learn in a developmentally appropriate setting while having the opportunity to engage in a variety of learning activities that keep children moving.

Which elementary school will my child attend?

There are 4 public elementary schools in Yankton.  The school boundary map can be found here.  Parents will receive the school assignment for their child in March.  If parents wish to appeal this assignment, they will need to complete an open enrollment form.

How do I open enroll?

The open enrollment form can be obtained at the Superintendent’s office located at 2410 West City Limits Road.  The open enrollment forms for the upcoming year will not be accepted until the first Tuesday in April.

When will I know the result of my open enrollment request?

These requests will be acted on by May 1.  Applications that are submitted after May 1 will be acted on by the first week in June and at other times as necessary to plan adequately for staff and classroom space.

What is Jr. Kindergarten/Kindergarten Screening?

Screening assesses readiness skills, and provides data that will be used by classroom teachers as they prepare for your child’s arrival to school in the fall.  Areas that are screened include: language skills, motor skills, social skills, self-help skills, and pre-academic skills.  Screening also offers an opportunity to meet the building principals and discuss screening results.

Who goes to screening?

All new, incoming JrK and K students are to attend screening (except current Jr. Kindergarten students).
