Over 1,000 patrons of the Yankton School District participated in a survey regarding the direction of the Forward 2024 Strategic Plan. One of the specific objectives was to “secure additional local funding through the passing of a successful Opt Out for the Yankton School District." In February 2020, voters in the Yankton School District approved an Opt Out for a maximum annual sum not to exceed $1.85 million dollars annually for four years payable in 2021. Each year, the exact amount levied is determined by the Yankton School District Board of Education. During the Opt Out discussions the Yankton School District committed to the public that if there was any time during this 4-year period when the entire amount was not needed, the maximum annual amount would not be taken, thus a reduction in the Opt Out during that period.
