Kathy Greeneway with her family

Yankton School Board Vice President Kathy Greeneway earned the 2026 Associated School Boards of South Dakota’s (ASBSD) Outstanding School Board Member of the Year honor.

The Outstanding School Board Member honor is presented to a South Dakota school board member who embodies the spirit of school board leadership in recognition of his or her dedication to the advancement of student learning at the local level.

Greenway is a proponent of strong student achievement by setting a high academic bar and providing an equitable education across the district, while also ensuring the safety and well-being of Yankton students. Kathy is also a great supporter of providing staff with local, state, regional, and national development opportunities and working tirelessly to retain district staff and recruit high-quality staff.

As a strong supporter of the district’s strategic plan, Greeneway has enhanced the process for developing the plan to involve parents, staff, school board members, administrators, and community members, and to ensure the board continues to learn through training, policy, and role discussions.

“Kathy is an excellent advocate for the students of the Yankton School District and public education across South Dakota,” ASBSD Executive Director Heath Larson said. “She embodies what a dedicated school board member is and is incredibly deserving of this award.”

ASBSD is a private, non-profit association representing around 850 South Dakota school board members, the 147 school districts they govern and the students they serve. Our vision is leadership to achieve excellence for South Dakota public education through a mission of partnering, advocating and leading.
